Oh man, the FLQ is nowhere near the worst part of Canadian history.
![]() 07/01/2020 at 15:21 |

It was really bad, the tensions between English and French went on for well over 20 years. The FLQ were radicals, but there was also a ton of resentment and violence based on language for a long time.

As someone who lives in Western Canada, there's still a ton of resentment towards Quebec.

Happy Canada Day!
I had no idea what Canada Day was (being an ignorant american) so I googled it and found out it commemorates when Canada was formed out of the unification of three separate Canadian provinces in 1867.
Happy creation of Canada Day!

Saw one of these SV-1's on an elk farm in upstate NY maybe 10 years ago. Red and black. Such an odd car but 10/10 would Hoon... safely.

Western Canada also resents Ontario, so there’s that. Quite honestly the worst thing Canada still hasn ’t addressed is the how the First Nations people are treated.

I also work on a reserve frequently, and I 100% agree.

Four, actually! Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia!
![]() 07/01/2020 at 15:39 |

Wikipedia lied to me then!
“which united the three separate colonies of the Province of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick into a single Dominion within the British Empire called Canada.”
Thanks for the correction!

The Province of Canada was made up of Upper Canada and Lower Canada. It's all semantics.

My home province joined in 1870 by way of armed uprising.

Fun fact: The SV-1 was never actually sold in Canada. It was built in New Brunswick solely for the reason that Canada had more attractive tax benefits for car manufacturers.
Hence why the Manic GT is the better Canadian sports car. Built in Canada and sold only in Canada because Renault said the Alpine A110 would be viable in Canada but didn’t actually bother to sell it to us.

Learn from us - give them some casinos, tax free cigarette outlets, and incinerator plants and just pretend like everything’s fixed now.

Yes, it was called Dominion Day until the achievement of full independence in 1982, at which point it was changed to the current name.

It’s true, Part of my job is to be able to speak both farmer and Toronto, If something is delayed, I just have to mention that Toronto is involved and all is forgiven. And the First nations got and continue to get the shit end of the stick.

That is a strangely aggressive name for a holiday. I can see why it was renamed.

Quebec has been trying to get out ever since ....maybe they just proactively deleted them from history.

It was to celebrate becoming a dominion, the term used to designate a self-governing realm within the British Empire. The Statute of Westminster in 1931 basically affir med that all the dominions were independent countries in a personal union, but, in Canada’s case, the final step wasn’t completed until 1982 when the power to amend the constitution was transferred from the UK parliament to the Canadian parliament in the final British North America Act (also called the Canada Act).

The results are kind of spotty down here anyway, the few that it's worked consistently well for are basically the Seminole and the Mohegan, at least until COVID19 wiped out the gambling and hospitality industries.

That adds up. ‘Dominion’ feels like the term for a territory the British empire would dictate as still under it’s control but allowed to govern itself.

The US uses the term “co mmonwealth”, except in cases where a co mmonwealth is also a state

I think ‘Protectorate’ is the US equivalent of it. Including places like Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa and so on.
![]() 07/01/2020 at 17:02 |

Puerto Rico is titled as a commonwealth, as was the Philippines in the transitional stage before independence. Guam is an organized territory, American Samoa an unincorporated territory. The last US protectorate was Cuba until 1934

What did Canada do wrong out of curiosity?
Seems like everyone has a history to contend with. Australia sure did some stuff.
